Garrett Turns One
Happy First Birthday Garrett!! Wow... what a year it has been. Life changing. And difficult. But oh so great! Although it has been hard, babies are a LOT of work, Garrett is such a good baby. I know it could have been a million times harder and a million times more work. I am very grateful for the wonderful, happy, sweet little boy that we have.
We had a little party for the birthday boy this weekend. I tried to keep it simple. Aaron made ribs & tri-tip on the smoker. I did a green salad bar and made (yes, from scratch) macaroni salad & potato salad. The cupcakes were store bought and the decorations consisted of a dozen balloons I picked up while getting the cupcakes. That's it.
We had a few family and friends over. Garrett only made it about an hour and a half before he started to lose it. He missed his morning nap (of all days!!) and so we put him down for a nap mid-way through the party. And he slept... and slept... and slept through the whole party!
Once he finally woke up, the party continued, with the few that were still there :). We sang happy birthday and he had his very first cupcake! He didn't go crazy over it. But he had a few bites.
Here's to another year of growing up and whatever craziness comes along with it... I love you little man!!

Milestones: Eating
Is eating a milestone? I dunno. But Garrett's eating solid food now! Well, he has been for awhile. It takes me a little while to get this all documented here sometimes.
We started him on solid foods the day before he turned five months old. I wasn't back at work yet, so it was super easy for me to run out to the store in the morning just to buy one piece of organic fruit or veggie and then, while Garrett was napping, I would cook, prepare, puree, whatever it was, and feed it to him that afternoon.
His first food was sweet potato. He liked it!!
After that we tried avocado. It was ok the first time, but he wouldn't eat it again after that. We tried a few times...

No luck. It ended up everywhere but his mouth.
And then there were pears, yams, bananas and more sweet potatoes. And then I went back to work. Now all baby food comes from jars and squeezy pouches. And he loves all of those!!
Milestones: Sitting Up
Garrett has a pretty large, sturdy center of gravity. So it was no surprise when he mastered sitting up pretty early on.
It started slowly. He would wobble this way, and that, falling over pretty regularly. This was back when I was working at home and my mom was coming up twice a week. She came up one Tuesday and he was still pretty wobbly. And then by Friday, he had totally mastered it. Just like that.
Everything got more interesting to him from this angle. He has always been an incredibly happy baby. But he has been so much more fun (and easy) now that he can sit up and look around and play.

Milestones: Sleeping
So, this blogging thing has been harder than I thought. Especially now that I am back at work, my weeknights are pretty much shot as far as free time goes. It's on my "to do" list every weekend, but so are a lot of other things that never actually get done.
Anyway, I just had a nice big iced coffee, Garrett is napping, and I'm multi-tasking. Trying to catch up on blogging while trying to watch some TV before the DVR reaches 100% full.
Garrett is six months old now. [Actually, seven months NOW... I seriously need to get better at posting these.] He has hit quite a few milestones. The first, which I have yet to blog about, is sleeping. I have been hesitant to write a post about sleep for a couple of reasons. First, because I really don't want to jinx it. And second, because I know it is a struggle for a lot of families. And just like when I see someone carrying their baby around in a carrier and they are not screaming bloody murder, it's not a good feeling to see or hear about someone else totally pulling it off when it's just not working for me.
But this is Garrett's blog and I want him to know how happy it has made his momma that he is such a good sleeper. It was halloween night the first time it happened. He slept for eight hours straight. I woke up in a panic at 5am and rushed into his room to make sure he was still breathing. This happened for three nights in a row, and then BAM... I got mastitis. I could barely get out of bed for the next three days, so Garrett's schedule was completely out of wack and so was his sleep. Oh, and not to mention, I had an allergic reaction to the antibiotics so I was covered in hives even after I finally recovered. It was a rough time. And we were back to waking up every two to four hours. It was really hard to get a taste of sleep and then have it all taken away.
Things eventually got back on track. I got better, Garrett's schedule resumed, and his sleeping improved. He was still sleeping in a swing every night for the next month. I was so afraid to move him to his crib and mess it all up. He was having a hard time staying asleep one night. Aaron and I were taking turns going in and checking on him. And then Aaron decided to put him down in his crib. We spent the next two hours trying to get him to stay asleep in there. I did everything I could think of, including climbing in with him and nursing him to sleep. It finally worked. And he has been a good crib sleeping baby ever since.
He still won't nap in his crib during the day. But I'll take what I can get.

Baby's First Christmas
Better late than never :)
Aaron and I hosted our first Christmas this year in the new house. We got a real tree, another first for us (as adults). And of course... it was this little's guys very first Christmas!!
We had my family over for Christmas Eve and (with a lot of help from Mel) had a nacho bar for Christmas Eve dinner.
Christmas morning started with opening all the presents under the tree while breakfast was cooking in the oven. We did a super easy, make the night before, french toast casserole.
There were sooo many presents!!
Aaron's family came over later that day. His dad, brother, uncle Brian and cousin Sean. Aaron cooked prime rib in the smoker. It turned out absolutely amazing! We served it with mashed potatoes, asparagus, and mac 'n cheese. Again, Mel saved the day by doing pretty much everything food related, while I tended to diapers, crying, naps, etc.
Family gatherings wouldn't be complete without my mom's minute to win it games. Everyone was a good sport and played all the games, even Aaron's family!
It was a great Christmas and I'm looking forward to many more family events in the months and years to come.

Back to Work
I started this blog post in February...
It's finally here. Garrett will be six months old on Tuesday the 17th. And exactly one week later, I will finally return to work. I have mixed emotions about that. I feel so lucky to have been able to spend this time with him. But I am ready to go back to my job. Taking care of a baby all day (and all night) is hard work!! I have so much respect for stay at home moms.
I actually started working part time at home (with Garrett) in January. When the situation presented itself, I thought it would be a nice transition back into my job, plus it would give me an extra month at home. He wouldn't need to start daycare, and I wouldn't need to commute to the office. But man oh man, it has been harder than I expected.
My mom has been coming up to take care of Garrett twice a week and the other days, I just work during his naps. Seems easy enough. But what I didn't think about is that I get NO break. When I'm not working, I am taking care of Garrett, running errands, showering (most days ;)) and trying to fit in laundry and housework when I can. And as soon as he conks out, I go right back upstairs to my office and back to work until he wakes up again. And it doesn't help that I'm not getting enough sleep on top of all of that.
So Garrett will start daycare on Monday and I start work on Tuesday. I will have one whole day all to myself!! Well, after I get a couple hours of work in. But with no baby, it will be easy peasy! :) I have scheduled a much needed massage that morning and a much more needed hair appointment that afternoon. So excited!!
And now here we are almost a month later....
Being back at work has been good. Busy, but good to be back on a daily schedule. Getting up, taking a shower (!!) and going to work everyday. I do have to say I enjoy my weekends a lot more than I used to. Especially the ones where I have no plans. So much more relaxing and a lot less "lazy" feeling.
Garrett is doing absolutely great at daycare. Since day one. No tears at the first drop off, none from Garrett and none from me! He loves being around the other kids and the daycare ladies are all so sweet and just love Garrett. Of course. He is such a happy baby!
